In conjunction with the Brunei Darussalam National Youth Day 2008, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) inaugurated issue of Brunei Darussalam's Youth Development Index (YDI).
The YDI as a preliminary study and serves as important source of information on youth development in Brunei Darussalam. The Commonwealth Youth Ministers agreed that each member country has to come up with their own Youth Development Index. The MCYS gave its full support and in line with our National Youth Policy, tasked professionals in research to conduct the study.
The collection of data on their status and well-being provides important indicators for practitioners, researchers and policy makers in assessing the impact of youth development programmes and activities. YDI is a tool to gauge the level of youth development in terms of their quality of life which includes their interest, health, happiness and potentials, among others. The indicators will also provide useful insight to relevant agencies involving youth to monitor and review the development of our young people based on the national youth development priorities.
The Brunei YDI study has been conducted using the survey questionnaire research method. It is hoped that this first study will be replicated with appropriate amendments and improvements where necessary on a regular basis so that the Brunei YDI will become a longitudinal study.
The questions for the Brunei YDI survey were formulated to measure and provide data on the following 8 domains of youths in Brunei:
